Secret Santa - Direct Digital

December 20, 2017

They see you when you're slacking. They know when you come in late. They know if you've been bad or good so be good for your work's Secret Santa exchange.

It’s that time of year! There’s a wonderful air of excitement around the office – Christmas is nearly here! One of the best team building activities is an office Secret Santa. Just in case you aren’t familiar with what to do, we’ll explain the whole process here. Every employee who wishes to participate has their name put into a hat. Everyone then proceeds to draw names. You keep the name secret and purchase a gift for them within a predetermined price range. This is usually relatively low, usually between the £5 - £10 price range. Secret Santa is symbolic, and its main goal is to get to know people a little better and to get closer with your co-workers. By selecting a happy medium price range, you are taking a lot of pressure off. The whole point is to have fun, not to fret over whether you’ve spent enough money on your co-workers!

The idea behind Secret Santa is a wonderful concept. Everybody receives a small gift and it also encourages you to buy for somebody you wouldn’t usually, and perhaps get to know them a little better in the process!

In the Direct Digital office, we’re exchanging gifts at the end of this week, just before we close for Christmas! So, we decided to put together a little list of ideas to help you in your quest – and a few DO NOTS for those who are struggling for ideas.

Let’s start with the biggest DO NOT!

  1. DO NOT GIVE MONEY. I know, I know. It’s a busy time of year – but please, don’t be that person who gives out money to your Secret Santa. Put a little bit of effort in!

    2. TAKE A LOOK AT THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA. We all share a lot on social media – especially          when it comes to our interests. A good way to get a truly personal gift is to have a snoop for        clues on their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

    3. GET CREATIVE! C’mon! you can do better than a candle or a bath bomb. Find something          useful and practical – bonus points for personal. If you can’t find anything, make something!        Remember – this is all about showing somebody else you’ve thought about them, not about        the flashiest gift.

    4. DO NOT BRING A USED GIFT. Repurposing is fine. But make sure the gift is usable and in        good condition. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - make an effort!

    5. Bottom line: Have fun! Don’t get worked up or stressed out! Do not take it too seriously.          This is ultimately a bit of fun – whatever you get for your Secret Santa will be appreciated. So      just relax and enjoy yourself!
